Madpie's Rifles

Just some information on my rifles.

I like rimfire .22s, fun to shoot and cheap!

This page details the modification of firearms.

Safety First

Do not attempt any work without correct gunsmithing tools and a thorough understanding of the work involved, of the angles involved in proper mating surfaces and how parts interact with each other.

You will need india stones for trigger work. Do not use a Dremel tool on the sear engagement surfaces as there is a high chance you can ruin parts and create an unsafe trigger. A good set of stones is required. While the internet is a great source of information, you have to remember that sometimes the uninformed post incorrect information on internet forums. Just because you read it doesn't make it right. Remember, safety first when you modify gun parts be sure you understand and test every modification.

Modifications I have made have been reserched by me from a number of different sourses. There are links to relevent threads on RimfireCenteral to the modifications and methods I use on this page. I will not go into details of the modifications here but will let the reader decide on the modifications merit by using these links as a starting point to the readers own reserch.

My Ruger 10/22

This is a 1980 (119 prefix) Ruger 10/22. The Ruger came to me after being in a house fire it was about the only thing that was not destroyed. The stock was singed but he rifle was not affected in any way. It was a good price. The scope was a airgun scope that the PO had taken apart so I replaced it with the scope off my TOZ 17, a nice old made in Japan 4 X 32 made by Carton, the TOZ got a new Bushnell Banner 3 X 9 X 42. The Ruger had been threaded for a silencer and the iron sights had been removed. The rifle looked like it had not been cleaned in years and the action was very dirty, but it had not been oiled so it was not too bad, so it was cleaned and lightly oiled with No. 9 synthetic oil.

OK, so with the rifle clean it was time to head out to the range and thus I have done some work to the trigger! When I first got this rifle it was stock and I had forgotten what the factory trigger was like. I thought I still had the saftey on, the factory trigger is Heavy! I fired a box of ammo to sight the scope and the Ruger shot well so had some fun on the 100 meter silhouette range.

I stoned the hamer notch and polished all the components of the trigger and bolt and now have a nice hunting trigger at a measured 3.7 pound pull and a nice crisp break. It is not a match trigger but cost me only time and is a vast improvement over factory. Next project on the trigger group is a adjustable sear. When I have done the work I will post details here.

I added a bolt stop polymer buffer to replace the standard steel buffer. The receiver at the buffer was in good condition and showed no signs of the many thousands of hits on the steel pin but polymer buffers are quiet so a good investment for $10.

I made a adjustable V Block from a thread on RimfireCentral by Cletus Hungwell removed the barrel band and fully floated the barrel to a eigth of a inch clearence. The stock has also been sanded down and coated in linseed oil, I like the look.

The bolt hold open has been modified by me to release by pulling the bolt handle back and letting it go insted of fumbling with the two handed factory method! This modification is simple to do all that is needed is a round file. For those not wishing to modify parts themselves after market replacements are inexpensive. Pictures and information of modified bolt hold open on RimfireCentral.

Added a trigger over travel stop.

I added a bedding pillar to the stock Flanged Bedding Pillar How-to by Hipshot and am glassbedding the action Bedding Your 10/22 by Jim Brossman. You must bed the Ruger with a floated barrel and pillar as the rifle povits around the take down screw as the whole rifle "floats" in the stock.

The stock has had a cheekrest added to bring the cheek weld to the level of the scope to suit medium mounts. The rest is a piece of pine carved to suit and held on by two screws.

I made my own slings to match this pattern GI Sling and use using 1 inch black double strength webbing with Hogue swivels and plastic fittings.

Future plans for the Ruger.

More trigger work including a adjustable sear and maybe a piano wire trigger reset.

My Ruger set up for silent spotlighting and as a handy carbine.

The spot light adds a fair bit of weight so is only used when I do not have someone to work the light.

Ammo

Sighting information I use was calculated with Chairgun Pro.

Ballistics information from Chuck Hawks.

Scope hieght is 4.2 cm on medium mounts.

The rifle is sighted in at 25 metres, PBR is Point Blank Range on a 3 cm kill zone i.e. you can put the target on the cross hairs of the scope and not have to hold over or under to hit within a 3 cm circle.

The rifle likes CCI subsonic and is sighted in for this round to be 1 cm high giving a PBR of 9.4 to 57.0 metres with a zreo at 50 metres. High velocity ammo CCI Minimags are at 0.66 cm for a PBR of 11.5 to 68.3 metres and a zero of 60 metres. I mainly shoot rabbits and hares and sometimes opossums and wallibies and I find this sighting suits the ranges I shoot from, Winchester Power Points and Federal bulk can both shoot minute of rabbit and are close enough to the MiniMags to not need scope adjustment.

My TOZ 17-01

This shows the condition of the stock when I got it. The red varnish was in very poor condition and the stock showed many years worth rough treatment. The rifle had no rear sight fitted and was threaded for a silencer and fitted with a 4 X 32 scope.

The stock has had a cheekrest added to bring the cheek weld to the level of the scope to suit low mounts. The rest is a piece of pine carved to suit and held on by two screws.

TOZ 17 Manual

TOZ Magazines

Magazines are hard to come by for the TOZ. The small 5 round magazine is the factory TOZ issue, the larger 10 round magazine is a modified Sportco unit. The Sportco retaining clip needs to be removed and a new one added a bit lower to suit the TOZ. Sportco was a manufacturer based in Australia.

Scope hieght is 3.5 cm on low mounts.

The rifle likes CCI subsonic and is sighted in for this round to be 1 cm high giving a PBR of 7.3 to 55.1 metres with a zreo at 48 metres. High velocity 36 grain 1260 fps ammo (CCI Minimags) are at 0.86 cm for a PBR of 8.7 to 66.5 metres and a zero of 57 metres. Winchester Power Points and Federal bulk both do not like feeding from the TOZ magazine if more than 5 rounds are loaded, normal round nose ammo feeds fine.

Crosman 38T

Phase 1 38T in 0.22 cal with 6 inch barrel

Looks "real", nice heavy revolver with nice accuracy in single action and a heavy pull on double action. I think the Crosman 38 CO2 revolvers are the best airgun revolvers ever. I am hoping to collect more 38s in the future, I would like one in 0.177.

Sharp Innova Mark 1

In 0.177 cal the Sharp is a pneumatic single shot with a steel barrel and wooden stock

Centrefire

My 0.303 No.4MkI*
